Sensitivity-based virtual fields for the non-linear virtual fields method

Abstract: The virtual fields method is an approach to inversely identify material parameters using full-field deformation data. In this manuscript, a new set of automaticallydefined virtual fields for non-linear constitutive models has been proposed. These new sensitivity-based virtual fields reduce the influence of noise on the parameter identification. The sensitivity-based virtual fields were applied to a numerical example involving small strain plasticity; however, the general formulation derived for these virtual f… Show more

“…The optimised definition of virtual fields for an elastoplastic problem is still an unresolved issue. Special virtual fields and sensitivity‐based virtual fields can be automatically generated to minimise the impact of the noised strain fields and was also applied in plastic parameters identification but only yield a relative success . Select suitable virtual fields are significant in the VFM identification employing noised test data.…”

“…• let us mention that it was recently proposed to use the sensitivity elds as computed virtual elds for using the virtual eld method in the context of nonlinear constitutive laws [55]. It is interesting to note how close this choice actually brings the VFM to the original FEMU technique that extensively uses sensitivity elds [4,56].…”

“…The contribution of each constitutive parameter to the response of the material is very different and unique. Therefore, a scaling in the cost function should be added (see [1] and [11]).…”
