Sensitivity of Lane Position and Steering Angle Measurements to Driver Fatigue

Abstract: The parameter value chosen to measure driving performance affects the accuracy of the estimated fatigue level. Methods to analyze the sensitivity of these parameter values were proposed. Standard deviation of lane position (SDLP) and steering reversal rate (SRR) were considered to assess fatigue, and the sensitivity of these parameters was analyzed from the time domain and value domain. Thirty-six male drivers participated in a field test. Lane position, steering wheel angle data, and self-reported fatigue lev… Show more

“…Three behavioral indices were calculated to indicate performance in a Go/NoGo tasks: the reaction time (RT) for correct trials, the miss rate for Go stimuli, and the false alarm rate for the NoGo stimuli. Subjective ratings of mental fatigue before and after fatigue manipulation task and the percentage of eye closure (PERCLOS) [ 38 ] and standard deviation of the lane position (SDLP) [ 39 ] in the first and last 30 mins of the simulated driving task were also calculated to reflect the level of mental fatigue. The formulas of reaction time, miss rate, PERCLOS and SDLP are shown in the following: Here, RT was the mean value of the reaction time on Go stimuli, RT k is the reaction time on Go stimuli at number k , n 1 is the amount of Go stimuli that corresponding to correctly.…”

“…Sahayadhas et al [37] summarize that many studies stated that vehiclebased only measures should not be used as a reliable fatigue predictor. Zhang et al [73] confirmed that lane position and steering features are inconsistent. Krajewski et al [74] describe large inter-and intra-individual differences in fatigued driving patterns, based on literature review.…”

“…Driving performance is another valuable measurement to confirm the drivers' fatigue status; in this study, the standard deviation of lateral position (SDLP) is used as a verification indicator parameter [47,50,51]; it reflects the driver's ability to avoid unintentional lane departure or lane crossing. e lane line position was collected by Mobileye at a frequency of 10 Hz, the average of SDLP data in one second was processed into new data after filtering and used as a verification indicator, and the SDLP is computed by…”
