Sensitization to isothiazolinones in the Spanish Contact Dermatitis Registry (REIDAC): 2019–2021 epidemiological situation

Abstract: Background Current frequency and risk factors for sensitization to methylisothiazolinone (MI), methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI), benzisothiazolinone (BIT) and octylisothiazolinone (OIT) in Spain are not well known. Objectives To study the frequency of sensitization, risk factors and simultaneous sensitization between the four isothiazolinones. Materials and Methods We analysed all 2019–2021 consecutive patients patch‐tested with MI (0.2% aq.), MCI/MI (0.02% aq.), BIT (0.1% pet.) and O… Show more

“…Contact allergy to MI, BIT, and OIT was assessed in consecutively patch‐tested dermatitis patients in various large studies from 2009 through 2021 in Europe (Table 1 and Figure 2). 4,18–22 Two similar studies had been performed in North America (NACDG) 2017–2018 and 2019–2020 (Table 1 and Figure 2). 23,24 The vast majority of patients in the studies were adults.…”

“…23 The prevalence of contact allergy to BIT was also significantly higher in the North American studies (NACDG) (7.3% and 10.4%) 23,24 than in corresponding European studies (ranging from 0.26% through 4.7%). 4,[18][19][20][21] The differences are attributed to more frequent skin exposure in North America owing to the lesser restrictions of MI, MCI/MI, and the use of BIT in cosmetic products in North America.…”
