Sensori-motor and Daily Living Skills of Preschool Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: Sensori-motor development and performance of daily living skills (DLS) remain little explored in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The objective of this study was to determine the impact of sensori-motor skills on the performance of DLS in preschool children with ASD. Thirty-five children, 3-4 years of age, were recruited and assessed with a battery of diagnostic and clinical tests. Children showed atypical sensory responses, very poor motor and DLS. Sensory avoiding, an excessive reaction to sens… Show more

“…On all measures, the ASD group had higher (more problematic) mean scores than the TD group on sensory and mealtime behavior measures. This finding is consistent with empirical findings reported in the literature (Jasmin et al, 2009;Keen, 2008;Nadon et al, 2011aNadon et al, , 2011bSchaaf et al, 2011). This study is unique because it also examined the relationships among sensory differences and mealtime behaviors.…”

“…Anecdotal reports from autistic adults describe motor impairments with significant impact on wellbeing and functionality (Robledo, Donnellan, & StrandtConroy, 2012). This, and the relationship between motor function and functional daily living skills (Jasmin et al, 2009;Travers et al, 2016), suggest that ameliorating motor dysfunction in ASC is worthy of considerable attention. We shall go on to explore the full ramifications of motor disorder in the remainder of this paper.…”
