This paper investigates the properties and design of energy conversion in an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain. Here, we combined the dynamics of vehicle motion with controlled electric propulsion, which is an EV powertrain. The control of two types of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) was considered. An algorithm was developed for the determination of the static characteristics of two-region motor torque control. A constant torque and a constant power region were used in the powertrain of the EV. The design of the control system for the PMSM was considered in the d,q reference frame. A precise mechanical model of the EV and the determination of road loads is shown. The main results of this study were the selection of the PI controller parameters (in analytical form), which was carried out for the simplified motor model and then extended for the d,q model, and energy consumption during the WLTP standard driving cycle. The presented simulation results of the proposed control system with synchronous motors in the EV (Fisker Karma as an example) confirmed the approach taken for the selection of the controller. The presentation of the EV’s acceleration for an optimized powertrain, and hence its performance, is a novelty not found in other articles.

Day by day use of internal combustion engines (ICE) compared to electric vehicles (EV) is deteriorating because mainly of pollution and their less fuel availability. In the present scenario, an electric vehicle plays a major role in place of an ICE vehicle. So that performance of EV can be improved by proper selection of electric motor. Initially, EV prefers induction motors for traction purposes, but complexity in controlling induction motor, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) presently used in EV by most of the electric vehicle manufacturers due to its advantages. This paper reviews on various control methods for PMSM used in EV. Various control methods are being used for EV applications. Initially, conventional direct torque control (DTC) technique being used in controlling electric motors but it has a drawback of high torque and flux ripples. Hence, intelligent controllers are predominantly using in controlling PMSM drives.

In this paper, an advanced integrator is proposed for the estimation of stator flux in a direct torque control (DTC) drive. A two-level lookup table-based direct torque-controlled interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive is implemented. DTC has the inherent disadvantage of DC drift and saturation in stator flux estimation due to a pure integrator. In the proposed work, a different approach to estimate stator flux is reported overcoming the constraints of a pure integrator in DTC. An advanced integrator with an adaptive controller is implemented to determine the stator flux and enrich the performance of the drive. A comparison of transient and steady-state analysis is carried out when IPMSM is fed by a low-pass filter-based DTC and proposed stator flux estimatorbased DTC. To make the system mechanically robust, stator current-based model reference adaptive control is executed to estimate the motor speed. A mathematical derivation for the stability study of the adaptation mechanism is carried out using Popov's hyperstability criteria. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and the soundness of the proposed work is presented by simulation results. Moreover, the experimental analysis using dSPACE1104 justifies the simulation results of the proposed system.
