This paper discusses the Flemish Literature Fund (FLF), an autonomous govern ment organisation created in 1999 by the Flemish Community to support Flemish literature at home and abroad. It traces the institutional history of the FLF, situating the organisation in the context of Flanders' longstanding struggle for cultural autonomy within the Belgian state on the one hand and its strong but unequal ties to the Netherlands on the other. Using a translation sociological analytical framework, it goes on to argue that the FLF's outgoing translation grant decisions reflect two strategies of international dissemination: a focus on the central languages of English, German and French, and a strategic use of the picture book genre to break into emerging languages on the periphery, especially Chinese. While the case of the FLF clearly illustrates the shifting power relations between state and market agents in the era of globalisation, it also indicates a novel approach to state-supported literary export designed to maximise a small, stateless nation's international resonance in a world market for translations dominated by larger (nation-) states and languages.

This article is concerned with a special case of translation, namely the registerial transformation of specialized LSP discourse into lay-oriented texts. This type of rewriting is intralingual mostly, but may also occur in combination with an interlingual element. Since previous research has mainly been concerned with one specific genre (Patient Information Leaflets as products of registerial rewriting), the present study investigates and compares three additional genres, all belonging to the field of medicine. Using the classic 'coupled-pairs' method (Toury 1995), the investigation uncovers the lexical and grammatical changes underlying the interregisterial derivation of targets from sources. The three genres turn out to be remarkably similar in terms of transformational strategies, with largely the same types of lexicogrammatical changes manifested in all target texts. However, a comparison of the different types of changes with each other reveals remarkable heterogeneity in terms of stylistic effect. In fact, different groups of strategies turn out to contribute very differently to the lay-oriented 'skopos' of the target texts. To capture these differences, a superordinate typology of five 'genera' of strategies (each subsuming a small handful of 'species') is proposed and arranged on a cline according to their degree of lay-orientedness.

Street food helps to characterise Southeast Asia as a popular gastronomic destination for tourism. However, confusion regarding its translation can make it difficult to understand the nature of its food types and selections. This study aims to examine how street food names in Malaysia are translated from Chinese to English and explore the cultural influence found within the translations of street food names. This study adopts a qualitative case study with thirty-six types of translations for mouse noodle, nineteen types for Hokkien Mee, twenty-two types for Wan Tan Mee, and seven types for Kueh Chap. Data analysis encompassed both the micro content analysis for food translation techniques with changes in content and linguistic aspects of translation varieties and the macro-analysis from an ethnography approach with a semi-structured interview comprised of perspectives from ten food vendors and twenty consumers. The analysis of the interviews is guided by linguistic and cultural factors. This study found that street food names were translated with transliteration, literal translation, amplification, omission, and their combinations—the results showed that transliteration was the most frequently used technique. In detail, the changes made in the translations were in both content and linguistic aspects—mainly addition, omission, restructuring, lexical, and morphological changes. The results also showed that the factors that played a major role include knowledge (background knowledge and linguistic competence), time, and culture (localisation and cultural policy). The ethnographic description explained how these factors result in transliteration within the social relations of Chinese Malaysians. In conclusion, the transliteration based on Chinese dialects and its varieties in spelling has labelled Malaysia a multicultural destination, in which its diverse cultures are intermingled in the translations of street food names.
