“…Hyodo and Urano (1991) have also examined the effect of altered environmental salinity on the expression of vasotocin precursor genes in the trout using in situ hybridisation techniques. The pro vasotocin hybridisation signals in magnocellular neurones were markedly decreased after transfer of fish from FW to 80% SW. By contrast, in the european eel after long term adaptation to SW, pituitary AVT content was higher than in FW-adapted fish (Holder 1968(Holder , 1970.…”

“…Seawater eel pituitary glands contain much larger amounts of AVT and isotocin than those of freshwater eels (Holder, 1970) and release of less than 1% of the amount found in seawater eel pituitary glands per 24 h would be sufficient to reduce the GFR and urinary flow of a freshwater eel to the values found in seawater eels. A single injection of a dose of hormone, which produces a maximum antidiuretic response in the freshwater eel, into a seawater eel produces a slight and non-significant increase in the flow of urine.…”

“…Holder (1968) showed that the total pituitary content of neurohypophysial hormones of silver eels (which have undergone metamorphosis preparatory to migrating to sea-water) was greater than that of yellow eels. In a series of papers, Holder (1969a, b;1970) showed that the levels of both AVT and isotocin were much higher in the pituitary glands of seawater eels than in those of freshwater eels, although the amounts in the preoptic nuclei did not vary greatly. Furthermore, the amount of AVT in the pituitary glands and preoptic nuclei of North Sea eels was greater than in eels from the more dilute Baltic Sea; this relationship did not hold for isotocin.…”
