Séparation des populations de hareng de l'Atlantique (Clupea harengus harengus) de l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent et de la péninsule gaspésienne

Abstract: Examination of morphometric and meristic characteristics of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus harengus) caught during spawning along the Gaspé coast and the St. Lawrence Estuary lead to the conclusion of the existence of at least three herring populations in that area. The first one occurs in the St. Lawrence Estuary, spawns in the spring and is characterized by smaller length-at-age values than the two other populations which are comprised respectively of spring-spawners and autumn-spawners that are fished of… Show more

“…Thirdly, CDA performed on the harmonics revealed by Fourier shape analysis showed that an excellent rate of accuracy in classification could be obtained between M. flavolineatus otolith from different sites (>90%). This level is very high compared to that in others studies: 73–89% for Clupea harengus L. (Côté et al , 1980) and 87% for Salmon salar L. (Friedland & Reddin, 1994). This suggests that variability in otolith shape could be a good tool for identification of recruits.…”

“…Typical classification success in comparable inter-stock separation studies in herring are typically in the range from 42%-96% (e.g. Côté et al, 1980;Schweigert, 1981;Messieh et al, 1989). Nevertheless, significant improvements in classification success could still be obtained by altering the procedures presented here.…”

“…Thirty years ago, Côté et al. (1980) reported differences in otolith shape between spring‐spawning Atlantic Herring captured in the middle SLE and those captured in the RE, and they suggested that those differences were the consequence of lower temperatures and poorer feeding conditions in the SLE nurseries. Those conditions caused slow growth of early life stages, leading to “pygmy” adult herring with lower lengths at age and a peculiar otolith shape.…”

“…The angle between lines joining the rostrum, postrostrum, and pararostrum (hereafter, “ANGLE”) was measured on the digital photographs using Image‐Pro Insight image analysis software (Media Cybernetics, Inc., Rockville, Maryland; Appendix Figure A.1A; Messieh 1972; Côté et al. 1980). The presence of glue deposits on the edge of the otoliths precluded the use of the automatic method of contouring for otoliths collected in 2013–2014.…”
