Separation of Floodplain Flow and Bankfull Discharge: Application of 1D Momentum Equation Solver and MIKE 21C

Shiblu Sarker

Abstract: A floodplain is an area of low-lying land adjacent to a river, stream, or other water body that is regularly inundated by water during periods of high flow. Floodplains typically have relatively flat terrain and are composed of sediments deposited by the river over time. Floodplain flow refers to the movement of water across the surface of the floodplain during periods of high flow. This flow can occur as a result of water spilling over the river banks or seeping into the ground and then re-emerging on the sur… Show more

“…As we have seen, even the fine resolution layer indicated inaccuracies which could not be prevented. Hence, we argue that a local and context-specific assessment (including, i.e., social, economic, and political criteria) is necessary for in-depth validation and for final decision-making to avoid implications for the environment, society, and overall flood risk [3,[51][52][53].…”

“…In addition, rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns (Singhal et al, 2023), and changes in extreme frequency events increase the likelihood of flooding (Sarker, 2023;Singhal et al, 2023), alter seasonal water supply (Mertz et al, 2009), and water level (Dusini et al, 2009;Yuan et al, 2015) and, as a result, have an impact on nutrient transport (Alifujiang et al, 2020). Climate change drivers such as area, location, and elevation contribute to similarities and differences, and few studies have been conducted to account for them (Lan et al, 2011).…”

“…Therefore, although most of Macao Peninsula has low mortality, a serious loss of life still occurs during extreme floods (e.g., compound flooding) because of the high population density. Furthermore, the river flood model was updated to represent inundation and the physics of river channels caused by extreme flooding events (Sarker, 2023). A method for simulating bankfull discharge and floodplain flow from observed discharge was developed using the MIKE 21C model.…”
