Separation of Light Rare Earth Elements by Solvent Extraction with a Mixture of Cationic and Tertiary Amine

Abstract: Rare earth elements with high purity are demanded for the manufacture of advanced materials. Light rare earth elements are contained in domestic monazite and Ni-MH batteries. In this paper, solvent extraction to separate the light rare earth elements from hydrochloric acid leaching solutions of these resources was discussed. A mixture of cationic and tertiary amine shows synergistic effect on the extraction of LREEs and the extent of pH decrease during extraction is reduced. The effect of solution pH on the ex… Show more

“…Among them, solvent extraction is the most versatile commercial method for separating Ce (III) because it can handle many diluent pregnant liquors 11 , 12 . For this purpose, different solvents such as acidic organophosphorus extractants 13 , 14 , neutral organophosphorus extractants 15 , high molecular weight amines 16 , 17 , and others 18 , 19 have been used for the extraction of cerium from aqueous solutions.…”

“…The use of dilute acids can prevent from damaging to process equipment. Different extraction systems have been applied for the recovery of neodymium(III), such as organophosphorus acids (Banda et al, 2012;Bina Gupta et al, 2003;Kumari et al, 2019;Riaño et al, 2020), organophosphorus esters (Kao et al, 2006;Zhang et al, 2015), and high molecular weight amines (Lee and Son, 2017;Lu et al, 1989). The combination of Cyanex 272 with different amine extractants was investigated by Liu et al (Liu et al, 2014) for the extraction of praseodymium(III) and neodymium(III) from aqueous solution.…”
