Separation of Silver (I) and Zinc(II) from Nitrate Solutions by Solvent Extraction with LIX63

Abstract: The separation of Ag(I) and Zn(II) from nitrate solutions using 5,8-diethyl-7-hydroxy-dodecan-6-oxime (LIX63) as the extractant was investigated as a function of nitric acid (HNO 3 ) and extractant concentrations. Selective extraction of Ag(I) over Zn(II) was achieved with LIX63 when HNO 3 concentration was in the range 0.001-1 mol/dm 3 . Quantitative stripping of Ag(I) from loaded LIX63 was accomplished using 5 mol/dm 3 of HNO 3 . The McCabe-Thiele diagrams for the extraction and stripping of Ag(I) with LIX63… Show more

“…[ In the case of Ag(I), the applicability of calix(4)arene amide derivatives [23], ketonic derivatives of calixarenes [24], Cyanex 272, Cyanex 302, Cyanex 301 [25] [26], bis-triazin-bi-pyridine (BTBP) [27], trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) [28], and 5,8-diethyl-7-hydroxydodecan-6-oxime (LIX63) [29,30] for the extraction of Ag(I) has been investigated. From a chloride-leaching solution of anode slimes containing Cu(II), Ag(I), and Au(II), Cu(II) was recovered by extraction with LIX63, followed by stripping with HCl, whereas Ag(I) was recovered via extraction with Alamine 336, followed by stripping with an NH 4 SCN solution [31].…”

“…Solvent extraction is a potential technique for recovering metal ions from solutions because of its important advantages, such as simplicity, flexibility, economic benefits, rapidity, lower costs, and being environmentally friendly, among others 12,16) . The chelating agent, 5,8-diethyl-7-hydroxydodecan-6-oxime (LIX63), was reported to have a selectivity on silver from nitrate solutions containing Ag, Zn; or Ag, Ca, Fe, Si, Re and Zn 17,18) . Sodium thiosulfate and high concentration of HNO 3 was used for stripping of Ag from the loaded LIX63 17,18) .…”

“…In the past, mercury was also used in silver oxide batteries, but the new generation silver oxide batteries are mercury free. For this reason, mercury pollution is no longer a big concern for the recycling of waste silver oxide batteries. , Pyrometallurgical processes are utilized in some industrial practices due to their high efficiency and relatively simple procedures. However, pyrometallurgical processes usually require heavy investment for high temperature materials and facilities to capture toxic gases .…”
