Separation of trace antimony and arsenic prior to hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometric determination

Abstract: A separation method utilizing a synthetic zeolite (mordenite) was developed in order to eliminate the gas phase interference of Sb(III) on As(III) during quartz furnace hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometric (HGAAS) determination. The efficiency of the proposed separation method in the reduction of suppression effects of transition metal ions on As(III) signal was also investigated. Among the volatile hydride-forming elements and their different oxidation states tested (Sb(III), Sb(V), Se(IV), Se(V… Show more

“…This finding is in accordance with the results obtained in one of our earlier studies which was about the gas phase interference of Sb(III) during hydride formation in HGAAS system [41]. The interference caused only during hydride formation can be eliminated with the use of ICP-MS if it is available in the laboratory.…”

“…For a better detection limit, arsenic was analyzed by AAS (Thermo Elemental Solar M6 Series) with an air-acetylene burner. Arsenic concentrations were determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS) method using hollow cathode lamps at 193.7 nm wavelength as described by Yersel et al (2005). The operating conditions for the HGAAS system are listed in Table 1.…”

“…Hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS) is the most widely used technique applied either directly or after a suitable pre-treatment step [9][10][11]. Hydride generation method has been reported to have the advantage of determining the different forms of arsenic (different oxidation states and forms bound to organic matter) on the basis of different kinetics of hydride generation by each species [12].…”
