Separation of Uranium and Lanthanides in a Fused Salt – Liquid Gallium Based Alloy System

Abstract: The results of thermodynamic calculations of uranium and lanthanides (praseodymium and neodymium) and experimental data on separation of uranium and neodymium in "LiCl-KCl-CsClbased melt -Ga-In eutectic based alloy" are compared. Additionally the results of calculations of separation of Pr/U and Nd/U couples using liquid gallium, indium and their eutectic alloy at 723, 773 and 823 K are presented.

“…The activity coefficient and solubility of U in liquid Ga significantly affect the extraction performance of uranium and its separation efficiency with lanthanides. The most common method to determine the activity coefficient is to measure the emf of the electrolysis cell: 2,7 (−) U| LiCl-KCl-UCl 3 |U(Ga) (+) [ 8 ] Basically, the cell's emf, E U (Ga) , depends on the temperature and activity, a U (Ga) , of U in liquid Ga solution as following:…”

“…6,7 Chemical extraction of uranium (U) from Ln (Nd, Pr) have been explored in LiCl-KCl or LiCl-KCl-CsCl melt/liquid Ga medium with a high separation factor (10 5 ). 8 Thermodynamic properties such as activity, activity coefficient and solubility of U in liquid Ga and its alloys have been also investigated by using emf method 6,7 or theoretical calculation. 9 However, an investigation toward the electrochemical behaviors of U on the liquid Ga electrode, although it is more efficient and operable for An extraction, as far as we known, have not been well performed yet.…”

“…Although the separation of fission elements on liquid electrodes is very effective and promising, there have been only few studies on the separation by using liquid indium electrodes. 16,17,24,[38][39][40][41] The goal of this manuscript is to study the principal thermodynamic properties of cerium and uranium in molten 3LiCl-2KCl eutectic, solubility of cerium in liquid indium and the separation factor (SF) of U/Ce couple.…”

“…The separation coefficients of An from Ln in the Ga media are even several orders of magnitude higher than that on any other low melting metals, such as Zn, Bi, Cd, In etc. 31,32 The thermodynamic properties of Ln on the liquid Ga-based media = These authors contributed equally to this work. z E-mail: shiwq@ihep.ac.cn have been explored for reductive chemical extraction in melt.…”
