Septic shock due to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection in an adult immunocompetent patient: a case report and literature review

Abstract: Background Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection can occur in an immunocompromised host. Although rare, bacteremia due to Y. pseudotuberculosis may also occur in immunocompetent hosts. The prognosis and therapeutic strategy, especially for immunocompetent patients with Y. pseudotuberculosis bacteremia, however, remains unknown. Case presentation A 38-year-old Japanese man with a mood disorder presented to our hospital with fever and diarrhea. Chest… Show more

“…The study of the Gram-negative zoonotic bacteria Y. pseudotuberculosis has been at the forefront of cellular and molecular pathogenesis for over four decades ( Davidson and Davis, 2020 ). Since Y. pseudotuberculosis has a very diverse host spectrum, it can infect virtually all warm-blooded animals, including humans, livestock, pets, and wild animals ( Hashimoto et al, 2021 ). Therefore, given the growing fascination of human populations with wildlife (such as game meat), the pseudotuberculosis can be expected to increase.…”

“…8 with Y. pseudotuberculosis is rare, but have been described in patients with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, malignancy, iron overload, and liver disease. 1,2 Though uncommon, infections with Y. pseudotuberculosis disseminated through the blood stream have been described, including hepatic, 9-14 splenic 13,15 and pulmonary abscesses, 16 peritonitis, 2 myocarditis, 2 osteomyelitis, 17 septic shock, 18 and meningitis. 2 Here, we describe the first Danish case of Y. pseudotuberculosis PLA in a patient with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus.…”
