Sequence stratigraphy of a carbonate‐evaporite succession (Zechstein 1, Hessian Basin, Germany)

Abstract: The evaporitic Hessian Zechstein Basin is a sub‐basin of the Southern Zechstein Basin, situated at its southern margin. Twelve facies groups were identified in the Zechstein Limestone and Lower Werra Anhydrite in order to better understand the sequence‐stratigraphic evolution of this sub‐basin, which contains economically important potassium salts. Four different paleogeographic depositional areas were recognized based on the regional distribution of facies. Siliciclastic‐carbonate, carbonate, carbonate‐evapor… Show more

“…A playa lake setting is inferred based on the sedimentology and the highly restricted fossil assemblages in most of FA-4 (cf. Warren and Kendall, 1985;Warren, 1999;Becker and Bechstädt, 2006). The lateral extent of this facies indicates formation in a shallow evaporitic setting larger than any known today and the term shelf rather than playa-like may be more appropriate (Kendall, 1992).…”

“…This interval of strata is assigned to a highstand systems tract (cf. Becker and Bechstädt, 2006). Many outcrops and wells show that Facies Association 4 developed uniformly throughout the Kashgar and Yecheng sags under saline, uniformly arid conditions (Figs.…”

“…Discriminating characteristics established by these analysis (morphology, mean size, roughness, sedimentary structures, textural and mineralogical composition) must be contextualized with previous knowledge of outcrop deposition (Tricart & Vonfelt 1955;Sittler & Demangeon 1963) because the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the deposits from which it was formed determines chert's characteristics and chemical components (Whittle & Alsharhan 1993;Murray 1994;Dasgupta et al 1999;Umeda 2003;Becker & Bechstädt 2006).…”

“…With halite accumulation rates at 5-150 m per thousand years (Becker and Bechstädt, 2006) and an adequate supply of brine, a minimum salt thickness of 1,000 m could be deposited in as few as 6,000 years or as many as 200,000 years. With a maximum salt thickness of 3,000 m, salt accumulation could last 20,000-1,500,000 years.…”
