SERGEI MIKHAILOVICH NIKOL'SKII (on his seventieth birthday)

Abstract: Monte-Carlo simulations on a 64 lattice are employed to calculate the 1 x 1 Wilson loops W(1, I ) and the associated string tension for pure U(N) and SU(N), N = 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 and 6, gauge theories in the weak-coupling region. It is shown that U(N)+ SU(N) as N increases, with U(6) L SU(6).
