Serial 3-Dimensional Computed Tomography and a Novel Method of Volumetric Analysis for the Evaluation of the Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis

Abstract: Currently, the detection of laminar resorption relies on clinical examination and the measurement of laminar dimensions on the 2- and 3-dimensional radiological images. Laminar volume measurement is a useful new addition to the armamentarium. It provides an objective tool that allows for a precise and reproducible assessment of laminar resorption.

“…In a retrospective study, Sipkova et al applied an automated algorithm called “Advanced Lung Analysis Software” on UK national cohort of OOKP patients and analyzed laminar volumes objectively from the serial multidimensional CT images. 99 This method is reproducible and identified resorption earlier than clinical examination in 60% of the patients. Early detection of resorption could help the clinicians to monitor the rate of bone loss and enables to intervene at the correct opportunity.…”

“…For postoperative assessment of the graft concerning the bone and dentin tissue, 3D radiographic imaging is desirable. Sipkova et al 10 have calculated the volume of OOKP. This might be sensible in some cases.…”

“…Detection in our cases was performed by obtaining a thin-layer CT scan of the orbit once a year to determine loss of material. Sipkova et al 36 published a laminar volume measurement to standardize the grade of resorption in CT scans. This suggested volume measurement was not established for our cohort.…”
