“…The value of postoperative monitoring of acute phase proteins in various types of surgery is the detection of infective complications by their absolutely or persistently elevated levels or secondary peaks (42)(43)(44)(45). In partial hepatectomy, however, as shown in this study and others (10,11,41), the postoperative elevation of acute phase protein levels was hindered by a reduced preoperative liver functional reserve or a small amount of residual hepatic parenchyma.…”

“…To do this we used a scoring protocol for wound healing to see if there were signs of impaired healing before the clinical diagnosis of postoperative wound infection was made. We also did serial measurements of CRP, CRP is normally elevated after cardiac surgery but serial measurements might show a different pattern for patients who develop infections (8,9). We identi ed an overall postoperative infection rate of 35% among the 175 patients we could follow up (Table III).…”

“…The value of serial CRP determinations in postoperative patients who have undergone cardiac surgery is well-established (39)(40)(41). Studies have demonstrated the usefulness of CRP in predicting postoperative infectious complications before the onset of clinical symptoms.…”
