Serious Renal Disease in Egypt

Abstract: We studied serious renal disease in Egypt by registering all 155 patients coming to the nephrology service at the University of Cairo during a period of 62 days in 1993. The patients presented with severe uremic symptoms. Admission creatinine and urea levels were high, 804 mumol/l and 64 mmol/l. Fifteen percent of the patients died; 115 underwent dialysis. Sixty patients presented with chronic renal failure; 53 with acute renal failure, but 24 of these were later found to have end-stage renal failure. Of 29 pa… Show more

“…Focal segmental sclerosis and diffuse global sclerosis accounted for 55% of all patients with suspected GN and 71% of those who had adequate kidney biopsy. None of the patients had membranous, membranoproliferative or IgA GN, contrary to reports from the United Kingdom [20] and other Arab states [21]. Although, a minority of GN progress to renal failure, the same pattern of GN was seen in Kuwaiti children over 7 years of follow-up (unpublished data).…”

“…The prevalence of acute renal failure, particularly iatrogenic toxic, increased. 6 On the other hand, the Egyptian renal registry showed in its year 2000 report that hypertension was the most common cause of ESRD in Egypt. 7 The same report showed that the prevalence of dialysis patients per million population was about 314.…”

“…In the former study, 5 out of 9 children with SRIGN had membranoproliferative GN, while this GN was not seen in any Kuwaiti children over 7 years of observation. This form of GN has been reported with relatively higher frequency in Arab patients from the Mediterranean countries [9] and in those with infections such as hepatitis (B and C) [10,11], malaria [12], and schistosomiasis [13,14]. In the Iranian experience [5], membranoproliferative GN was diagnosed in 80 of their 411 patients (19%) with GN as compared with 2 in the 25 patients (8%) in the Saudi children [4].…”
