Serious Suicide Attempts: Evidence on Variables for Manage and Prevent this Phenomenon

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the variables shown to be linked to serious suicide attempts. Cases requiring emergency admission to intensive care were collected from medical records of the University Hospital in Messina (Italy) for the years 2006-2010. 107 cases of serious attempted suicide were examined, 39 of which ended in the death of the patient. The results showed the following variables to be linked highly significantly (P < 0.01) and have good nominal association (V > 0.30) with a fatal suici… Show more

“…Accordingly, our results show that probable ADHD is associated with highly lethal suicide attempts (leading to admission in an intensive care unit) independently of comorbid psychiatric disorders, treatment or impulsive-aggression levels. Serious suicide attempters, if they survive, often complete suicide later in life 26,27 .…”

“…Two-thirds of those with serious physical illness and half without reported psychological pain as a reason for the attempt, and 23% with serious physical illness provided no explanation, suggesting that psychological processes play a greater role in the suicidality of individuals with poorer physical health (Wiktorsson et al, 2016). Among medically serious suicide attempts, 13.7% had orthopaedic diseases (Mento et al, 2015). Our findings are considerably controversial, with musculoskeletal diseases presenting as a possible preventive factor for serious suicidality.…”

“…Specifically, hopelessness has been shown to be elevated among SSA survivors (Beautrais et al, 1999;Durant et al, 2006). Mento et al (2016) examined a sample of suicide attempters that had been admitted to intensive care units and found having a deceased father and a history of physical illness prior to hospitalization, may predict further severe suicide attempts and even fatal attempts. These variables are robustly linked to the experience of mental pain, which may stand at the center of the suicide wishes (see also Kim et al, 2020).…”
