“…ELISA titers against EHV-1 gG significantly rose in 30 (37.5%) out of 80 horses and those against EHV-4 gG rose in 9 (11.25%). These results were consistent with previous reports that EHV-1 is responsible for epizootic respiratory diseases in racehorses in winter [10,20], and revealed that EHV-4 is also sporadically responsible for respiratory disease among racehorses during the period. In addition, sera of two horses (Table 2, M28 and M42) reacted to both antigens.…”

“…Thereafter both EHV-1 and -4 spread among various horse populations in Japan. Today, many racehorses at two Training Centers of the Japan Racing Association (JRA) have suffered from respiratory disease with pyrexia by EHV-1 or -4 infection [20]. Furthermore, foals and yearlings suffering from respiratory disease on breeding and rearing farms also have been diagnosed serologically to be infected with EHV-1 or -4 [8,19].…”

“…Winter pyrexia caused by EHV-1 epizootics in the training centers of the Japan Racing Association is an important condition that needs to be controlled, because it can delay training schedules and cause horses to be scratched from races (13). The spread of EHV-1 in the training centers may be due to the fact that, in these centers, Ͼ2,000 racehorses are kept in close contact and are subjected to stress from cold weather and hard training.…”

“…
Equine herpesvirus type 4 (EHV-4) causes a pyrogenic respiratory disease in young horses that have been bred and reared in farms (3), and EHV-1 is a major cause of respiratory disease among racehorses during the winter in Japan (5,7,8). Since these viruses are serologically cross-reactive, horses infected with EHV-4 have antibodies that function against EHV-1 and are thus somewhat protected from EHV-1 infection.

“…However, many EHV-4-infected racehorses in Japanese breeding and rearing farms have also become infected with EHV-1 in training centers during the winter. Such infection has caused fever and occasional disorders of the central nervous system (5,7). Therefore, it is important to understand the pathogenesis of EHV-4 to prevent infections with both EHV-1 and EHV-4.…”
