Seroconcordant sexual partnerings of HIV-seropositive men who have sex with men

Abstract: Our findings suggest that at least three sets of factors predispose HIV-positive men to engage in unsafe anal sexual behaviors with their concordant partners: a decreased belief that infection with other pathogens or re-infection with HIV present health problems; less evaluation of sexual activities and behaviors; more hedonistic expectations of sex and higher levels of sexual compulsivity, as well as recreational drug use with and without sex.

“…Unprotected sex between HIV-seropositive men presents potential risks to their own health. These risks and factors that influence risk behavior with seroconcordant partners are also considered [62]. This special issue includes a report that addresses the ability of the peer-based intervention tested in SUMIT to motivate changes in sexual practices and the disclosure of HIV status to new sex partners [47].…”

“…Erectile dysfunction and the use of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction are associated with sexual risk and HIV/STI acquisition among MSM [88][89][90][91]. Sexual compulsivity and other measures of sexual dysfunction have also been linked to sexual risk behavior among MSM [34,87,[92][93][94][95][96]. MSM living with HIV experience especially high rates of sexual dysfunction [87,91,[97][98][99][100], and sexual dysfunction in this population has been associated with poorer adherence to HIV treatment [101] and HIV/STI transmission risk behavior [87,91].…”
