Seroepidemiology of parvovirus B19 in the Frankfurt am Main area, Germany: evaluation of risk factors

Abstract: The seroprevalence of parvovirus B19 in patients admitted to the University Hospital in Frankfurt a.M. was, on average, lower than that among the general population in Germany. Infection among patients in specific risk groups did not spread more than that in age-matched non-selected patients, with the exception of the group of immunocompromised patients.

“…Furthermore, our groups were matched by age and sex. This, in turn, excludes the bias, which is made by a higher seropositivity to anti-HEV-IgG in elder patients: as previously documented for several infectious diseases [38,39], rate of seropositivity to anti-HEV-IgG is also increasing by age [40,41] and Fig. 2.…”

“…B19V seroprevalence among patients with sickle cell disease patients increased with age, beginning with low rates in children (20.7%) to almost complete seropositivity in patients aged >40 years (93.3%). Although this epidemiologic distribution reflects the immune response to B19V [Reinheimer et al, 2010], it nevertheless demonstrates increased viral circulation among elderly patients with sickle cell disease. In contrast, in blood donors, the highest seroprevalence was detected in individuals aged 18–29 years (65.6%), whereas in donors aged 30–39 and >40 years it was similar and reached a plateau.…”

“…Der quantitative IgG-Test dient auch zur Beurteilung der PV B19spezifischen AK im Immunglobulin für die passive Immunisierung. Die Bestimmung infektionsneutralisierender AK steht nicht zur Verfügung, weil das PV B19 in speziellen Zellkulturen nur schwer züchtbar ist [8,9,10].…”
