Serologic Types and Physiologic Characteristics of 46 Avian Pasteurella anatipestifer Cultures

Abstract: Forty-six strains of Pasteurella anatipestifer isolated from different avian species were examined to determine their serologic types and physiologic characteristics. Serologic types were determined by a gel-diffusion precipitin test. Antigens from 39 field isolates reacted with antisera prepared from seven P. anatipestifer reference strains representing serotypes 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7. Antigens from five isolates did not react and could not be typed with available reagents. Gel precipitin reactions involving sero… Show more

“…However, four sera gave clearly positive results with two to four RA strains each. The presence of RA isolates, which clearly react with two or more serotype reference sera, has already been described (Brogden et al, 1982;Pathanasophon et al, 2002), thus sera produced against such strains may in turn react with more than one serotype. The remaining four commercial sera could not be assigned to any of the 23 RA strains tested.…”

“…These serotypes are the most prevalent and frequently related to outbreaks of RA disease on duck farms in South Korea (QIA 2008). We serotyped RA isolates using a modification of the agar gel precipitation (AGP) test described by Brogden et al (1982). Briefly, 16-wk-old specific-pathogen-free chicken antisera against the reference serotypes 1, 4, and 7 were obtained from QIA, South Korea, and were prepared, as previously described (Pathanasophon et al 2002;QIA 2008).…”

“…Preparation of the antigens was modi¯ed from previous studies. 16,17 The antisera were prepared by inoculating New Zealand White rabbits with the reference strain, which was a kind gift from Dr. ChaoFang Yu (Biologics Division, Animal Health Research Institute, Taiwan). 19 Cultured RA isolates (on agar plates for 24 h) were suspended in 1.0 mL of phosphatebu®ered saline (PBS), boiled for 1 h and then centrifuged at 8000 rpm for 10 min.…”
