Serological markers of persistent C. trachomatis infections in women with tubal factor subfertility

Abstract: In subfertile women with tubal pathology, serological markers of persistent C. trachomatis infections are significantly more common as compared to women without tubal pathology. C. trachomatis IgG-positive subfertile women with slightly elevated (< 10 mg/l) CRP levels are at highest risk of persistent C. trachomatis infections and tubal pathology.

“…These high oestrogen levels may stimulate the production of CRP in the liver, resulting in a CRP pattern strongly different from the one seen in spontaneous, non-stimulated cycles. Similarly, elevated CRP levels have been found in women using oral contraceptives (37,38) and also in women with tubal factor subfertility due to persistent Chlamydia trachomatis infection (39). Another theoretical explanation could be the fact that in contrast to physiological cycles, 5000-10 000 IU of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is administered in IVF treatment cycles.…”

“…3,15,16 It is the most prevalent and most active in causing tubal damage of all sexually transmitted diseases. 7,[16][17][18][19] Presumably the increasing incidence of infertility is consequent to a rising incidence of tubal infection with C. trachomatis and other sexually transmitted pathogens. It is estimated that in western countries and Nigeria by the end of one year of unprotected sexual intercourse, 10-15% and about 30% respectively of couples will fail to conceive.…”
