Coinfection of hepatitis C (HCV) may compromise antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Nigeria. In this study, we evaluated the seroprevalence of HIV/HCV coinfection in people living with HIV/AIDs (PLWHA) receiving ART and associated factors. Patients were selected from HIV-1-infected patients enrolled in National HAART Cohort at Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, Nigeria. Following the manufacturer's instructions, medical assessments and anti-HCV antibody serology were obtained for analysis with an ELISA kit (Dia. Pro). A total of 4 of 104 PLWHA tested were anti-HCV antibody positive (4.0%). HIV/HCV coinfections were higher in age groups >41 years (4.4%), males (7.0%), CD4 counts 350-499 cells (7.1%) and PVL >1000 copies/ml (10.0%). CD4 counts and viral load were an indicator for HIV/HCV coinfections. Socio-demographic variables were not associated (p > 0.05) with HIV/HCV coinfection in univariate analysis; older PLWHA were more likely to be HCV-positive. Males were more prone to HIV/HCV coinfection than females. HIV status did seem to influence the predisposition to HCV infection, as an increase in susceptibility was observed with HIV-infected patients in Yenagoa, Nigeria. The high prevalence of HIV/HCV coinfection in PLWHA in Yenagoa receiving ART demands routine screening for viral hepatitis coinfection, intensive prevention of childhood HCV transmission, and modification of the management of HIV infection.

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) testing is the only method currently used in laboratories to diagnose hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in febrile patients. The South-South area of Nigeria does not currently have data on the prevalence of anti-HBc-IgM. The main goal of this study was to identify the serological evdience of anti-HBc-IgM markers among febrile patients in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Following the manufacturer's standard operating procedures, 92 febrile patients were tested for HBc IgM antibody during cross-sectional research from November 2020 to October 2021. The prevalence of anti-HBc IgM antibodies (35.9%) and anti-HBc-IgM negatives was 64.1%. The prevalence of anti-HBc- IgM antibody was higher among older age groups (44.7%), females (53.3%), singles (42.9%), tertiary educational level (42.2%) and civil servants (47.4%). None of the variables evaluated was significantly associated with the prevalence of HBc IgM. This study shows that 35.9% febrile patients have anti-HBcIgM as the only serological evidence of HBV infection. This study identifies a possible danger of HBV transmission from febrile individuals who test positive for anti-HBc to the general population. Anti-HBc-IgM antibodies are prevalent in Port Harcourt among feverish patients. In Nigeria, screening patients who are feverish for anti-HBc IgM should be encouraged. This research represents the first evaluation of anti-HBc IgM in the South-South region of the nation.

Due to the possible negative effects on both the mother and the foetus, co-infection with syphilis, hepatitis C virus (HCV), andHelicobacter pylori(H. pylori) in pregnant women is a serious public health problem. In this study, pregnant patients at the Mbodo Health Centre in Aluu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were asked to rate their prevalence of co-infection and related risk factors. 96 willing pregnant women gave consent for blood samples to be drawn, and ELISA and fast diagnostic kits were used to test the sera forHelicobacter pylori, hepatitis C, and syphilis. Results showed that 31.0% of the pregnant women hadHelicobacter pylori, but none had positive results for syphilis or the hepatitis C virus. The highest prevalence ofH. pyloriinfection, as determined by ELISA, was observed in the age group 30-39 years (37.5%), married groups (32.7%), secondary school education (44.0%), students (40.0%), and Christian religion (31.3%). This finding demonstrated thatH. pyloriwas more common in the study area than the other two pathogens. Pregnant women visiting the Primary Health Centre, Mbodo-Aluu, Rivers State had significant rates ofH. pyloriinfection with no coinfection with HCV and syphilis. This study emphasises the necessity of integrated screening and treatment initiatives during antenatal care. However, preventing unfavourable pregnancy outcomes and lowering the risk of vertical transmission to the baby need the early detection and treatment of these pathogens. Therefore, it is important to emphasise good knowledge and education about the infection in this area.
