“…The individual specificity of different grass pollens is a very complicated subject and cannot be considered in detail but there is some evidence (Wodehouse 1948) that all grass pollens have a common antigen while individual grasses possess a specific antigen which in Timothy pollen is often a dominant for other grass pollens. The evidence from chemical and immunological studies (Augustin 1952(Augustin , 1953 suggests much similarity between different pollens and there is also evidence (Hoet et al, 1952) that there is some individual specificity in response when comparing different grass pollens. There is no clear indication whether a single grass pollen extract or a mixture of many grass pollens should be used in treatment of a hayfever sufferer.…”

“…More over, if non-precipitating antisera were really univalent, on the basis of the Lattice Hypothesis (81), they would also be expected to be non-agglutinating. The consensus of investigators who have applied these methods to the sera of allergic individuals is that the antibodies which were hemagglutinating apparently were not of the sensitizing but of the " blocking" type (68,70,73). In line with the latter observation is the ability of hemagglutination to detect antibodies for insulin in the sera of insulin-resistant diabetics (14,15).…”
