Seroprevalence and molecular characterization ofLeishmaniain dogs from an endemic area of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil

Abstract: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) can cause large-scale and tenacious epidemics with high fatality rates. Current seroprevalence and circulating Leishmania species were evaluated in dogs domiciled in the municipality of Sabará, a small historic and touristic city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. A total of 3926 dogs domiciled in seven different districts of Sabará were serologically tested for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) and immunofluorescence (IFA) assa… Show more

“…There are reports of significant reductions in canine and human VL cases after the removal of seropositive dogs, as well as no effect after massive euthanasia [41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49]. An aggravating factor is that clinically asymptomatic dogs, and infected dogs with divergent serological results are maintained in people's homes, where they act as potential sources for Leishmania vector infection and facilitate the disease transmission cycle [50][51][52][53]. Recently, the Brazilian Ministry of Health approved a proposal for the incorporation of collars impregnated with insecticide (4% deltamethrin) for the control of visceral leishmaniasis in priority municipalities [54].…”

“…According to the authors, these animals presented twice the risk of seroconversion as compared to dogs with negative PCR. More recently,in an endemic region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the parasite in 73% of asymptomatic dogs was found mainly on the skin [239].…”
