Seroprevalence of Dengue Virus and Rickettsial Infections in Cambodian Children

Abstract: Scrub typhus (ST, Orientia tsutsugamushi), murine typhus (MT, Rickettsia typhi), and dengue virus (DENV) are important causes of childhood morbidity in Cambodia. This prospective, cross-sectional seroprevalence study determined the proportion of Cambodian children infected by these pathogens and the ages at which initial infection is likely to occur. A total of 993 patient serum samples were tested for MT-and ST-specific IgG, and 837 samples tested for DENV-specific IgG. Overall, ST, MT, and DENV seroprevalenc… Show more

“…However, the fact that syndromic DENV-4 patients were older could suggest the recent emergence of this serotype and/or a low DENV-4 circulation in Lao PDR at least since 2009 [ 30 ]. These findings demonstrate that a large proportion of the Lao population is susceptible to DENV-4 and highlights the need to study the immune status of populations living in dengue-endemic countries in order to predict and prevent future DENV outbreaks as previously done in Lao PDR [ 22 ] and in Asia in general [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. Furthermore, this study highlights the need to perform serotype-specific studies of the immune status of the population.…”

“…AMS programs from Cambodia and South Africa have demonstrated substantial impacts. However, whilst resource-constrained, these settings are very different from Malawi, and their stewardship successes relied upon established pharmacy infrastructures [ 20 , 21 ], specialist microbiology liaisons [ 22 ], and a comprehensive formulary [ 23 ].…”

“…Positive samples were subsequently tested for neutralizing antibodies (nAb) against JEV and dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV-3) by foci reduction neutralization test (FRNT) if a sufficient volume of sera remained. The strategy to test for both JEV and DENV was chosen because DENV is known to be widespread in the region [ 43 , 44 ] and to induce cross-reactions with anti-JEV antibodies [ 45 ].…”
