Seroprevalence of Human Herpesvirus 6 Infection in Brazilian and Japanese Populations in the North‐East of Brazil

Abstract: The seroprevalence of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection was examined for 434 Brazilians and 250 Japanese immigrants living in Recife and its vicinity, in the North-East of Brazil.A total of 684 sera from the healthy individuals were screened for IgG antibodies to HHV-6 by anticomplement immunofluorescence (ACIF) test. The seropositivity rate to HHV-6 showed little difference between the two groups: namely, it was 76.5% for Brazilians and 77.2% for Japanese immigrants. The seropositivity rate was constantly… Show more

“…It is well known that erythematous rashes occur in many common viral infections, like arboviruses, infectious mononucleosis, enteroviruses and the more recently described human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6). Preliminary studies of HHV-6 infection in north-east Brazil detected seroprevalence rates of 70% and children were found to possess high level of antibodies 15 . So the etiology of these cases remains to be elucidated.…”

“…Nevertheless, the seropositivity in the adult population is now estimated to be Ͼ95% for either or both HHV-6 variants in developed countries, the antibody titers showing a decline with advancing age (27,175,322,354). HHV-6 is widespread throughout the world, with geographic differences in HHV-6 prevalence varying between 70 and 100% (36,69,240,306,409,432); given the above-mentioned limitations, these differences may be insignificant. A serologic test discriminating between HHV-6 variants is not available.…”

“…The first studies dealing with HHV-6 infection in Brazil were carried out by LINHARES et al 33 , who recorded seroprevalence rates of 76.5% and 77.2% in Brazilian and Japanese immigrants, respectively, in the north-eastern region. Subsequent serosurvey studies conducted in the Amazon region of Brazil yielded prevalence rates of HHV-6 antibody that ranged from 5.4% to 14.9%, among amerindians 16 , and from 75% to 100% in the urban communities 17 .…”
