Seroprevalence of human Toxoplasma gondii infection among pregnant women in Charsadda, KP, Pakistan

Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is a very common and asymptomatic infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Pregnant women can develop serious complications if the infection passes to the developing fetus. Primary infection in the pregnant women during the gestation period will result in the development of severe systemic disease with temporary parasitemia and will affect the developing fetus. Several clinical complications can be observed in the congenitally infected children which include mild disease to serious health defects s… Show more

“…Here [40]. Similarly, another study from Pakistan reported that the 31-40-year age group had the highest toxoplasmosis incidence (33.33%, 30/110), followed by the 21-30-year age group (30%, 33/110) [46].…”

“…There is a dearth of information on its seroprevalence [54,55]. Appropriate data on parasite prevalence and transmission routes would enable accurate risk assessment in pregnant women and aid the creation and implementation of parasitic infection control and preventive strategies [40,55]. Here, we determined that the total incidence and epidemiology of toxoplasmosis in Pakistan is higher in the female population (25.44%) than in the male population (21.48%), while combining male and female participants resulted in a low prevalence rate (15.67%) that was significantly different (p < 0.0001).…”

“…As it is estimated of 1 infected child per 1000 births, 2649 children with congenital toxoplasmosis are likely to be born annually in Brazil ( 9 ). The result of studies shows different prevalence in different areas: 33% in Iran ( 10 ), 34% in Pakistan ( 11 ), 31% in Turkey ( 12 ), 55.8% in Romania ( 13 ), 31.5% in Austria ( 14 ), 13.8% in Italy ( 16 ), 82.6% in Lebanon ( 17 ). There were limited studies about anti-toxoplasmas antibodies prevalence in the Ardabil region.…”
