Seroprevalence of mycoplasmosis in broiler, layer, and native chickens in Giza, Egypt

Abstract: We aimed to investigate Mycoplasma infections among chicken flocks (Ross, Lohmann and native) in Giza, Egypt, using serological tests, including the slide plate agglutination (SPA) test, hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The slide plate agglutination examination, a serological test, indicated the prevalence of Mg and Ms infections of 10.9% and 13.2%, respectively. On 91 SPA test positive serum samples for either Mg or Ms, a passive hemagglutination/hemaggluti… Show more

“…Alveolitis, or inflammation of the air sacs, can also be caused by the bacteria. As previously demonstrated [19], this can result in thickening of the air sac walls, secretion and fibrin accumulation, and adhesion of the air sacs to each other and to other organs. In general, M. gallisepticum infection in birds can cause significant histopathological effects, resulting in decreased productivity and welfare .…”

“…False and true positive reactions may differentiate by ELISA as a more precise measure. ELISA can track particular anti-Mg IgG that shows the onset of Mycoplasma-induced respiratory disease at different intervals in chicken sera [8]. The sera analyzed in this study came from laying hens of various ages, between 28-96 weeks.…”

“…RSA tests have disadvantages, such as false positive reactions (low specificity) related to crossreactions between bacterial species and medium components [9]. ELISA test has high specificity, easy and effective test, can be used to detect specific anti-Mg IgG in chicken sera at different time intervals after Mycoplasma infection [8]. However, other studies have shown that false positive reactions on MG detection show high results on ELISA and RSA tests [10].…”
