“…5-HT1A receptors mediate a strong hyperpolarizing effect of 5-HT on granule cells and pyramidal cells through activation of GIRK channels (Andrade and Nicoll, 1987 ; Beck et al, 1992 ; Okuhara and Beck, 1994 ; Piguet and Galvan, 1994 ; Twarkowski et al, 2016 ; Ul Haq et al, 2016 ), reducing firing frequency, and dampening gamma oscillations (Twarkowski et al, 2016 ). This hyperpolarization is opposed by activation of 5-HT4 receptors on pyramidal and granule cells, and 5-HT7 receptors on pyramidal cells that inhibit sAHP currents to increase firing frequency (Bacon and Beck, 2000 ).…”

“…This compares well to a previous study which stated that stimuli sufficient to induce LTP also induce SPW‐Rs when LTP inducing stimulus paradigms were repeated a few times (Behrens et al ., ). During such events we noted sequential activation of neurons as indicated by the different sizes of extracellular action potentials and participation of a given cell with one or at best two action potentials while most other pyramidal cells were silent (Behrens et al ., ; Liotta et al ., ; ul Haq et al ), similar to spontaneous SPW‐Rs in murine CA1 (Valero et al ., ; Ul Haq et al ., ) The type of stimulation activated pyramidal cells at somewhat different latencies due to run time differences to and within the associational network. SPW‐R after HFS for induction of LTP were not that often observed ‐ presumably because many LTP experiments in area CA1 have been done with area CA3 removed.…”

“…In many cases the observation of spontaneous activity may also have been neglected since this activity was considered to be a sign of epilepsy. However, there are many distinct differences between epileptiform discharges and the stimulation induced sharp wave ripples (Behrens et al ., ; Jarosch et al ., ; Ul Haq et al ., ). These concern the number of action potentials (Liotta et al ., ), the rises in potassium concentration, sensitivity to gabazine and bicuculline (Behrens et al, ), and consumption of oxygen (Jarosch et al ., ), to name just a few.…”

“…As mentioned previously, the effects of ACh on membrane resistance, AHP, and ADP vary widely, especially among interneurons (Cea‐del Rio et al, ; Chapman & Lacaille, ; Cole & Nicoll, ; McQuiston & Madison, , ). Furthermore, adaptation was not included because typical adaptation timescales are in excess of 100 ms (Fleidervish, Friedman, & Gutnick, ; Madison & Nicoll, ), whereas typical ripple events have a duration of about 50 ms (Malerba et al, ; Sullivan et al, ; ul Haq et al, ). Thus, we cannot rule out these effects as being necessary for the cholinergic suppression of ripples.…”
