Serrated neoplasia of the stomach: a new entity

Abstract: Aim-Despite the fact that gastric carcinoma continues to be one of the most common cancers world wide, only dysplasia in flat mucosa and adenomas have been shown to evolve into invasive carcinoma. The aim of this paper is to report a novel histological phenotype of gastric adenoma with early invasive growth. Material and results-The patient presented with gastric complaints. A barium examination revealed an ulcerated tumour in the corpus, apparently infiltrating the gastric wall. The endoscopic examination sho… Show more

“…Limited reports focused on the clinical features of UPGI serrated lesions because of the low prevalence of these lesions, and few articles have described serrated adenomas in the UPGI[7-25]. Thus, serrated polyps have not been previously listed in the classifications of the upper digestive tract[34-36].…”

“…In 1992, Stolte et al[6] revealed a characteristic “hypertrophy” of the parietal cells that was induced by omeprazole, and produced a serrated internal gland profile. In addition, in 2001, Rubio[7] reported the first case of serrated adenoma of the stomach. Since then, serrated dysplasia has been reported in patients with Ménétrier-like lymphocytic gastritis[8], reactive gastropathy[9] and even Barrett’s esophagus[10], and it is epitomised by hypereosinophilic cytoplasm, small oval-shaped nuclei and prominent luminal serration.…”

“…Gastric localization is quite rare with only six cases reported in English literature [12, 13]. In this report, we will present a serrated adenoma localized in gastric antrum which had follow up biopsies and we will discuss the altered mucin expression of the lesion which may have a possible role in its carcinogenetic pathway.…”

“…It had the microscopic attributes of a sporadic serrated adenoma, a tumour that is relatively common in the colorectal mucosa, 8 9 and is occasionally reported in the stomach. 10 ''Recently, while reviewing partial duodenectomy specimens we found one patient with FAP who had a duodenal adenoma with a histological configuration that differed from those previously described in the literature''…”
