Serum 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D level in general Korean population and its relationship with other vitamin D biomarkers

Abstract: Background Vitamin D status is presently assessed by measuring total serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]. However, 25(OH)D concentration alone might not accurately reflect vitamin D status owing to its weak relationship with various clinical indices and inconsistency across races. Recently, 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [24,25(OH)2D] and vitamin D metabolite ratio [VMR; ratio of 24,25(OH)2D to 25(OH)D] have emerged as vitamin D biomarkers. The present study aimed to determine the values of 24,25(OH… Show more

“…Simultaneously to dynamic increase of 25(OH)D 3 and 1,25(OH) 2 D 3 , we noted early triggering of catabolic pathway. We found that serum 24,25(OH) 2 D 3 concentration was positively correlated with serum 25(OH)D 3 , which is in accordance with the study published by Kim et al [44], in which strong correlation between 25(OH)D 3 and 24,25(OH) 2 D 3 was observed (r = 0.868, p < 0.001). This relationship may be explained by the fact that enzymatic synthesis of 24,25(OH) 2 D is regulated by 25(OH)D concentration and vitamin D receptor activity in CYP24A1 [44,45].…”

CYP24A1 is also inducible by its substrate 1,25(OH) 2 D 3 , which is a protective mechanism from excess VDR pathway activation.…”

“…However, only free (unbound) and albumin-bound vitamin D reflect biological activity; 44 in addition, the effects of vitamin D should be identified through vitamin D receptor polymorphisms. Nevertheless, a study involving an Asian sample reported that total 25(OH)D concentrations were closely correlated with bioavailable 25(OH)D. 45 Therefore, 25(OH)D can be regarded as a primary marker of vitamin D status. Sixth, peripheral NfL levels do not represent total NfL levels in the central nervous system.…”

“…Vitamin D deficiency can accelerate and exacerbate osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults ( 31 33 ). In Korea, vitamin D status is still deteriorating, and vitamin D deficiency is a fairly common health problem ( 34 , 35 ). In the susceptible population, cholecystectomy may play an important role in the risk of fracture.…”
