Background: Gestational hypertension is a significant threat both to maternal and fetal health. However, it is still a distant dream to predict accurately its occurrence in early pregnancy. Objective was to find out if β HCG levels determined between 13 to 20 weeks of gestation can be used as a predictor for gestational hypertension.Methods: This prospective observational cohort study was conducted from August 2014 to January 2016. Serum β HCG levels were determined at 13 to 20 weeks of gestation of 190 normotensive pregnant women attending the antenatal clinics. They were followed for the development of gestational hypertension till 40 weeks of gestation or delivery.Results: Out of the total 190 women, 25 (13.1%) developed gestation hypertension. Of those who developed gestational hypertension, 22 (88%) were having β HCG levels >2 MOM (p<0.001). Absolute β HCG levels (Mean±SD) were also significantly higher (54907±29509 V/S 41095±19103; p<0.001) in subjects who later developed gestational hypertension. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and the negative predictive value for β HCG at >2 MOM were 83.3, 96.9, 80.0 and 97.5 respectively (95% CI).Conclusions: Pregnant women with high Beta HCG levels in early pregnancy have significantly higher risk for development of gestational hypertension.

Objective: To study serum lipid profile between 13-20 week of pregnancy & to look for correlation, if any, of serum lipid levels in pregnancy with preeclampsia and to find out correlation, if any, between serum lipids profile and fetomaternal outcome. Material and methods: We carried out a Longitudinal, Descriptive type of observational study in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SDMH, Jaipur from June 2016 to April 2017.Total 125 patients were enrolled in study fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria between 13-20 weeks of gestation at SDMH, Jaipur, 14 patients were lost during follow up finally 111 patients remained for analysis .Serum lipid profile was done in all patients and these were followed till delivery for presence and absence of preeclampsia. Results: The mean level of TC in participants developed preeclampsia was 224.36±43.68mg/dl. This was significantly higher as compared to normotensive group 180.77±36.58mg/dl. Conclusion: Early prediction of preeclampsia can be used as a tool for primary prevention before the development of the disease. There is no single specific test available to predict the preeclampsia till date. So there is need of further research to discover the specific test to predict preeclampsia

Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The objective of this study was to measure β-hCG during 13-20 weeks of gestation and compare the same between those who develop Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy with those who do not. Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out on 200 primigravida patients in their second trimester (13-20 weeks) attending the OPD in Muzaffarnagar Medical College. Serum β-hCG levels were estimated in all these patients by CLIA (chemiluminescent immune assay) technique. All pregnancies were followed up till delivery for the development of Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Results: Out of 200 patients, 27(13.5%) cases developed Pregnancy induced hypertension. Of those who developed PIH, 22(70.9%) were having β-hCG levels >2 MOM (P< 0.05). Absolute β-hCG levels (Mean ± SD) were also significantly higher (95963.0 ± 42337.64 V/S 40319.74 ± 10659.42; P< 0.05) in subjects who later developed PIH. Sensitivity, Specificity, Positive predictive value and Negative predictive value for β-hCG were 85.2%, 92.5%, 81.98% and 94.8% respectively. Conclusion: Serum β-hCG estimation at mid trimester (13-20 weeks) is a good predictor of PIH and higher levels of β-hCG are associated with increased severity of PIH.
