Serum CA 125 Levels in Patients with a Provisional Diagnosis of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Clinical and Theoretical Implications

Abstract: In 50 patients with a provisional diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), CA 125 concentrations in serum were measured before laparoscopy and during hospitalization, using an enzyme immunoassay. The findings at laparoscopy were graded on the basis of the extent of inflammatory peritoneal involvement (grades 0-3; normal observations having a score of 0). On admission, 66% of the patients had serum CA 125 concentrations in excess of the cut-off value of 16 U/ml (range: 20-1300 U/ml). The serum CA 125 con… Show more

“…Other authors have chosen 16 units or 30 units as their cutoff level when looking at CA125 and salpingitis in select groups of patients. 5,6 Only 3 patients (10.7%) in this study with acute salpingitis by laparoscopy had a level of CA125 greater than 35 units. No patients with a CA125 level over 7.5 units had normal tubes at laparoscopy.…”

“…CA125 levels have been studied specifically as a tool for their predictive value in diagnosing PID and detecting the degree of inflammation when PID is suspected. [5][6][7] None of these studies have been performed on a U.S. population of patients.…”
