Serum circulating miRNA‐342‐3p as a potential diagnostic biomarker in parathyroid carcinomas: A pilot study

Abstract: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy, accounting for less than 1% of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and only 0.005% of all cancers. 1,2 Five-year survival rates, as pooled from different registries and case series, are in the range of 76%-85%, with 10-year survival rates being between 49% and 77%. 3,4 Recurrence occurs in more than half of PC cases, with the five-year survival rate in patients with metastatic disease being less than 50%. 5,6 Reports from the United States, Austral… Show more

“…Emerging evidence from Hu et al (2022), Krupinova et al (2021) and Wang et al (2022), highlights the potential diagnostic role of microRNA-(miRNA) and microDNA-(miDNA) molecule expression in PC tumours. MiRNAs play an important role in the occurrence and metastasis of tumours as they are involved in almost all biological processes and affect cell proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, migration, invasion and apoptosis (Verdelli & Corbetta 2017).…”

“…MiRNAs play an important role in the occurrence and metastasis of tumours as they are involved in almost all biological processes and affect cell proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, migration, invasion and apoptosis (Verdelli & Corbetta 2017). PC cancer can lead to alterations of circulating miRNA expression in the blood as reported by Krupinova et al (2021). The group detected a downregulation of serum miRNA-342-3p in PC patients when compared to patients with BPA, suggesting miRNA-342-3p as promising biomarker for improvement of diagnosis of PC.…”

“…Parafibromin is a 531 amino acid protein encoded by the CDC73 oncosuppressor gene. The interaction between parafibromin and β-catenin regulates various cellular processes involved in tumorigenesis [ 13 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 ]. The absence of parafibromin staining might be an adjunct immunohistochemical marker in the clinical routine for distinguishing benign from malignant parathyroid tumors, predicting the clinical outcome and mortality rate even better than CDC73 mutation [ 51 , 52 , 53 ].…”

“…According to the latest studies, miR-342-3p plays a role in the development of various tumors and negatively regulates cell viability. Moreover, its potential as a therapeutic target in non-small cell lung neoplasms is considered [ 47 , 68 ].…”
