Serum concentration of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) is sensitive to physiological cyclic loading in healthy adults

Abstract: Even a moderate walking activity can significantly influence serum COMP concentration. The immediate response points to a diffusion time of COMP fragments from cartilage to the blood of 30 min or less. The response at 5.5h indicates a metabolic delay for COMP in the range of 5h to 6h.

“…For instance, serum concentrations of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) increase after exercise bouts of walking (Mündermann, Dyrby, Andriacchi, & King, 2005;Mündermann, King, Smith, & Andriacchi, 2009;Pruksakorn et al, 2013), running (Kersting, Stubendorff, Schmidt, & Bruggemann, 2005;Niehoff et al, 2010;Niehoff et al, 2011) and marathon running (Neidhart et al, 2000) but not after deep knee bends (Niehoff et al, 2010). Hence, load-induced changes in COMP appear to be sensitive to load magnitude.…”

“…The relationship between various degrees of load intensity in the physiological condition and the circulation pattern of biomarkers has also been addressed in order to determine the reliability of each biomarker. (1)(2)(3) This is an important step in the validation process of biomarkers, prior to their use in clinical application. Furthermore, the sensitive relationship between minor changes in cartilage structure and serum biomarkers could be used for optimising activities to prevent long-term unfavourable consequences due to subclinical damage.…”

“…The fulcrum of the biomechanic factors is joint loading, which in fact is associated with the pathogenesis of medial knee OA (9,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). The knee joint loading during walking is of particular interest because walking is the most common method of human locomotion and causes repetitive joint loading.…”
