Serum Epidemiological Trial on the Prevalence of the Anti-Cytomegalovirus Antibodies in Patients under Substitutive Treatment with Hemodialysis and CAPD

Abstract: The detection of IgG and IgM anti-cytomegalovirus is very important when movements of serum transaminases are noted in absence of positivity for virus of hepatitis in uremic patients on substitutive treatment; in our patients, we have noted a positivity of 67% for the IgG class. Cytomegalic infection must be taken into consideration for the high parenteral transmissibility in addition to the high grade of immunodepression of uremic patients.

“…[ 16 ] There are several published articles on seroprevalence of CMV among hemodialysis patients in Europe in 1990s. The prevalence of CMV antibodies in this population is reported to be 67% in Italy,[ 17 ]80% in the Czech Republic,[ 18 ] 83% in Germany[ 19 ] and 99.3% in Serbia. [ 20 ] A study conducted in the Netherlands in 2007 showed a seroprevalence rate of 68.7% among Dutch patients.…”

“…Interestingly, all the other 4 patients had their liver enzymes elevated around the time of their peak GMTs of IgG to either CMV or EBV. Although virus isolation was not done at that time, this temporal relationship warrants further work‐up for CMV and EBV infections when liver function deteriorates in hemodialysis patients, especially those without hepatitis B or C (9).…”

“…It is considered as an opportunistic infection in hemodialysis patients. The prevalence of antibodies specific for CMV in adults undergoing hemodialysis ranged from 67% up to 100% in different geographical areas [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. In one Egyptian study, the seroprevalencewas 98%for CMV-IgG and 11% for CMV-IgM [9].…”
