Serum hepcidin levels in women infected with HIV-1 under antiviral therapy

Abstract: Accumulating data suggest that iron may have a role in the regulation of HIV-infection. In the present study, we determined by radioimmunoassay the levels of hepcidin, a key regulator of iron homeostasis, in sera of 182 women infected with HIV-1 under highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). In the total cohort, hepcidin levels were lower in individuals infected with HIV than in controls (3.20 ± 3.06 vs. 5.68 ± 3.66 nmol/L, P = 0.009). Serum hepcidin concentrations were strongly correlated positively with… Show more

“…Hepcidin levels were shown to be increased in HIV infection with or without ART, which is consistent with reduced serum iron levels, 45 but another study demonstrated reduced hepcidin levels in HIV-positive women, which can lead to increased iron release into the circulation. 46 Our results are more consistent with reduced hepcidin levels leading to increased serum iron, although we did not measure hepcidin levels in our studies.…”

“…These conflicting data need further investigation. Malvoisin et al also demonstrated higher levels of hepcidin in individuals with high viremia, which is consistent with our results [ 20 ].…”

“…Hepcidin levels remained elevated in patients in the chronic phase of the disease without the use of HAART, increasing the viral load. This effect was not found in patients with HBV or HCV, indicating that hypoferraemia is pathogen-specific and that the HIV-1 virus utilizes intracellular iron for viral replication [163,164,165,166]. …”
