Serum IL-6/IL-10 ratio as a biomarker for the diagnosis and severity assessment of primary-open angle glaucoma

Abstract: Objective: To assess the performance of serum cytokine IL-6 and IL-6/IL-10 ratio as biomarkers for the diagnosis of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and for determining its progression. Methods: In this study, 20 POAG patients and 21 healthy individuals from the Indonesian population were enrolled. The serum concentration of IL-6 and IL-10 were quantified. Comparative analysis was performed in addition to assessment of the diagnostic performance of cytokines using receiver-operating-curve (ROC) analysis. Res… Show more

“…IL-6 is also reduced with the treatment of 100 μmol/L ripasudil in our study. IL-6 is considered an important cytokine associated with the diagnosis and severity of POAG [ 40 , 41 ]. Therefore, reducing the secreted IL-8 and IL-6 levels can at least partly explain the benefit of ripasudil in the treatment of HTLV-1-infected hTM cells, further supporting the feasibility of using ripasudil for the relief of secondary glaucoma in HU.…”

“…Intense inflammatory staining in the optic nerve head of glaucoma eyes with an elevated proinflammatory BSF-2(IL-6) levels have been witnessed during histological examinations of the human retina [ 32 ]. Ulhaq et al, (2021) highlighted the importance of the BSF-2(IL-6) cytokine in the ocular inflammatory process in glaucoma and confirmed its utility as an early marker of injured retinal ganglion cells in glaucomatous animal models [ 11 ]. This is in line with our study findings.…”

“… 46 At present, there are few studies on serum IL-6 and TNF-α levels in patients with PACG and there is no evidence to confirm that serum cytokine levels are directly correlated with the cytokine levels in the eyes. 47 This area of research requires further investigation with larger sample sizes.…”
