Serum insulin‐like growth factor‐I and body composition in community dwelling older people

Abstract: In this large cohort of community dwelling older people, we observed lower serum IGF-I levels in the higher age categories. A low serum IGF-I was associated with significantly lower measurements of body composition, such as BMI, skinfolds and WHR. These results do not support previous findings that high IGF-I levels are favourable for a healthy body composition in community dwelling older people.

“…Overall, there is strong evidence that ACE inhibitors lead to an increase in circulating IGF1 levels. We found significantly higher IGF1 values in men than in women in accordance with a recent publication (24). The reason for this difference is not known but testosterone and also physical activity are known to affect IGFI (24,25).…”

“…However, in contrast to recently published studies, we found no significant gender differences in IGF1 levels in the middle-aged-and oldest-old subjects (37,38). Gender differences were present for IGFBP3 levels consistent with the findings of previous studies (39).…”

“…Given the anabolic properties of IGF-I and previous reports of positive associations with IGF-I with muscle mass [19], thigh muscle area and density [20], these findings might appear counterintuitive. However, other studies have not observed significant associations between IGF-I and fat-free mass [10,22,23]. While a negative association between IGF-I and body fat has been reported in previous reports among older subjects with greater fat content [11,21,23,24], these associations have been diminished after adjusting for age.…”
