Serum Lactate Dehydrogenase Contributes to Prognostic Assessment in Patients With Oligometastatic Cancer and Brain Involvement

Abstract: Background/Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic impact of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in patients with oligometastatic brain metastases, arbitrarily defined as max. Four brain lesions and 5 metastatic lesions overall. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective single institution analysis. Overall, 42 patients were identified from a prospectively maintained database. Results: Seventeen patients (40%) had extracranial metastases. Twelve patients (29%) had elevated LDH (≥255 U/l). Th… Show more

“…liquid biomarkers and surrogates of impaired organ function. 19,20 For patients with breast cancer, a Polish study reported median survival of 20 months in the setting of a solitary brain metastasis (i.e., no extracranial spread) and 11 months for patients with single brain metastases. 21 In our combined group (n=21, too small to stratify), the corresponding figure was 13 months.…”

“…Statistical analysis. The methods have already been described in our previous study (14). Overall survival (time to death) from the first day of radiotherapy or surgery was calculated employing the Kaplan-Meier method, and different groups were compared using the log-rank test (SPSS 27, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA).…”

“…Likely, the score reflects the total tumor burden and associated processes such as inflammation and cachexia (15). Based on previous results with LDH only (14), the hypothesis of the present study was that the LabBM score may improve existing prognostic models, which typically include Karnofsky performance status (KPS) and number of brain metastases (17,18).…”

“…The detection and management of oligometastatic tumors has improved during the last 5-10 years (1,2). Considerable research efforts are undertaken to further improve the outcomes in this biologically distinct subgroup of patients (3)(4)(5)(6)(7). Radiotherapy with ablative doses has gained increasing acceptance in this setting, but palliative radiotherapy continues to represent an important treatment option.…”
