Serum Levels of Androstenedione, Testosterone and Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate in Patients with Premature Ovarian Failure to Age-Matched Menstruating Controls

Abstract: Serum concentrations of androstenedione, testosterone and dehydroepian drosterone sulfate (DHEAS) were measured in 29 patients with premature ovarian failure (POF) and an identical number of age-matched normal control subjects. The study was aimed at determining possible differences in androgen concentrations of ovarian and adrenal origin in POF patients and agematched normal menstruating controls. Serum testosterone and DHEAS con centrations in the 2 populations were not significantly different. The serum and… Show more

“…In this group, testosterone and DHEA concentrations were similar as female controls, while AD concentrations were significantly lower. In the existing literature, it is debated whether POI is associated with decreased androgen concentrations (14,(29)(30)(31)(32)(33), and only one study presented with results similar to ours (34). As previous studies only applied direct RIA, chemiluminescence immunoassays, and extraction RIA, conflicting findings most probably resulted from lower sensitivity, lack of specificity, or lower accuracy of these assays (10).…”

“…Women with POI have significantly lower levels of free and total testosterone than regular menstruating women of similar age; this phenomenon is even more apparent following surgical menopause. 4,42,47,48 Improved sexual function and overall sense of well-being are described with the addition of androgen to estrogen-based hormonal regimens. 49 Although data are limited, androgen replacement may be of consideration in the certain women who remain symptomatic despite use of estrogen-based hormone therapy of adequate dose and duration.…”

“…Also there might be loss of ovarian androgens because of atrophy of the ovarian cortex (Elias, Pandian & Rojas, 1997). The primary basis of treatment used is estroprogestative hormone therapy, recommended at least until the average age of natural menopause, to reduce or control impacts related to hypoestrogenism (Maclaran & Panay, 2011).…”
