Serum levels of the IgA isotype switch factor TGF‐β1 are elevated in patients with COVID‐19

Abstract: We previously observed enhanced immunoglobulin A (IgA) responses in severe COVID‐19, which might confer damaging effects. Given the important role of IgA in immune and inflammatory responses, the aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic response of the IgA isotype switch factor TGF‐β1 in COVID‐19 patients. We observed, in a total of 153 COVID‐19 patients, that the serum levels of TGF‐β1 were increased significantly at the early and middle stages of COVID‐19, and correlated with the levels of SARS‐CoV‐2… Show more

“…Eccles et al in their studies also provided evidence both for the overlap between hypermobile Ehlers–Danlos syndrome and FM, as well as between FM and CFS (up to 90%), which may allude that, that disease may be a part of one spectrum [ 18 , 19 ]. In addition, in patients with the Marfanoid phenotype, a high level of TGF beta1-beta2 can be expected, which worsens the clinical course and prognosis of COVID-19 [ 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”

“…It is known that TGF‐β1 plays an important role in tissue regeneration, tumorigenesis, and immune response. In respiratory disease, it has been revealed that it causes the proliferation of fibroblast, leading to pulmonary fibrosis 65 . In a study of 153 patients with COVID‐19, Wang et al.…”

“…In a study of 153 patients with COVID‐19, Wang et al. found that the plasma levels of TGF‐β1 increased significantly in early and middle stages of the disease 65 . They assumed that TGF‐β1 has a key role in COVID‐19 pathogenesis.…”

“…The latter includes transforming growth factor (TGF) beta 1, possibly depending on the TGF-beta1 activator THBS3, which is genetically associated with severe COVID-19 cases, as suggested by the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative (https://www.covid19hg.org). This topic is highlighted in the study by Wang et al [42]. Whether it relates to the increased COVID-19 risk in patients suffering from inheritable mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and thickened mucus in the lungs is unknown.…”
