Serum Levels of Vitamin A, E, and Selenium in Women with Lichen sclerosus of the Vulva Treated with Etretinate

Abstract: Forty-six patients with Lichen sclerosus (Ls) of the vulva were treated with peroral etretinate for 3 months. The pretreatment serum levels of vitamins A and E, and selenium were measured. Etretinate therapy proved to be effective in the treatment of Ls; however, it did not affect the vitamin A status of the Ls patients. Vitamin E and selenium levels did not differ from the control values, nor did they have any prognostic value.

“…However, in the chronic disease lichen sclerosus of the vulva effective treatment with etretinate in 46 women did not affect pre and post-vitamin A and E or Se status, nor did these data have any prognostic value. 16 Van-Noord et al attempted to determine the possible role of Se in the pathogenesis of breast cancer on premenopausal women. 5 No decreased selenium levels were found in toenail clippings up to two years prior to diagnosis, nor was there any correlation between selenium values and the prevalence and/or incidence of breast cancer.…”
