Serum Lipoids in Diabetes

Abstract: Recently high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets have been widely advocated for diabetic patients (3,17,20,23,24,30,36,48,52). As arguments for this therapy it has been claimed that hypercholesterolemia is of grave prognosis in diabetes and that high fat diets may superinduce hyperlipemia. The following investigation was undertaken to determine the incidence of hypercholesterolemia in diabetes, to study the relation of the cholesterol level to that of fatty acids and phospholipoids in blood serum, and also to learn w… Show more

“…Of these patients four had diabetes with complications, two had renal disease, four had hepatic disease and one had an intracranial lesion-probably a tumor in the region of the pituitary. Increases of neutral fat in the serum have been reported in all these conditions (16)(17)(18)(19). Four of the remaining seven belonged to the group of patients who developed fever and arthritic symptoms during treatment with thio-drugs.…”

“…These last were diabetics with symptoms of autonomic instability who had been on insufficient diets. Their hypercholesterolemia has been discussed previously in relation to their metabolic disorders (14). Of the 3 undernourished patients with normal cholesterolemia no history of insufficient diet could be secured from A52555.…”

“…Hypertriglyceridemia of varying degrees is frequently seen in untreated diabetes mellitus; it is almost the rule in severe insulin deficiency with ketoacidosis (19)(20)(21)(22). Treatment with insulin or oral antidiabetic agents returns elevated plasma TG to or toward normal indicating that absolute or relative lack of endogenous insulin may be a cause of diabetic hypertriglyceridemia.…”
