Serum lutein concentrations in healthy term infants fed human milk or infant formula with lutein

Abstract: BackgroundLutein is a carotenoid that may play a role in eye health. Human milk typically contains higher concentrations of lutein than infant formula. Preliminary data suggest there are differences in serum lutein concentrations between breastfed and formula-fed infants.Aim of the studyTo measure the serum lutein concentrations among infants fed human milk or formulas with and without added lutein.MethodsA prospective, double-masked trial was conducted in healthy term formula-fed infants (n = 26) randomized b… Show more

“…In comparison, mean plasma lycopene in term (Figure 1). These results confirm a recent observation 20 that lutein content in formula needs to be Bfour times greater than in HM lutein content in order to achieve similar plasma lutein levels. There were no differences between the two study groups in growth.…”

“…31 Recently, it has been suggested that carotenoid fortification of term infant formula at the high end of the range of HM content might maximize functional effects without posing safety risk. 20,32 Our findings demonstrate safety and potential health benefits in a large group of preterm and extremely preterm neonates. This is the first randomized, controlled, double-blind, parallel, multicenter study to assess the effect of feeding a carotenoidsupplemented diet to preterm infants.…”

“…The most important ones are β-carotene and lycopene. Lutein concentrations in human milk range from approximately 3-237 mg/L (Bettler et al, 2010;Canfield et al, 2003;Jewell et al, 2004;Tacken et al, 2009). Taken together lutein and zeaxanthin account for 28% of total (Song et al, 2012 In colostrum the carotenoid pattern resembled those of plasma and the low-density lipoprotein fraction.…”

“…As inúmeras vantagens do aleitamento materno são conhecidas e apontadas na literatura atual [1][2][3][4][5] . Os nutrientes contidos no leite humano são especialmente adequados ao metabolismo da criança, nos seus aspectos quantitativo e qualitativo 6 .…”
