Serum macrophage migration inhibitory factor is correlated with atrial fibrillation

Abstract: There were higher serum MIF concentrations in AF patients than in healthy subjects. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that serum MIF was associated with AF. Permanent AF patients exhibited higher serum MIF concentrations than persistent and paroxysmal AF subgroups. Elevated serum MIF concentrations were found in persistent AF patients compared with paroxysmal AF patients. Moreover, serum MIF concentrations were associated with left atrial diameter after Spearman correlation analysis.

“…Inflammation and oxidative stress, as major contributors to cardiovascular disease, have been implicated as risk factors for AF 12‐14 . Mediators of the inflammatory response are closely related to electrical and structural remodeling in atria, thereby leading to increased vulnerability to AF 19 . Inflammation also has an effect on calcium homeostasis and connexins, which are associated with triggers of AF and heterogeneous atrial conduction.…”

“…A higher circulating level of MIF was reported in patients with atrial fibrillation (90). MIF may be a key factor in atrial arrhythmogenesis by regulating T-type and L-type calcium channels in atrial myocytes (91,92).…”

“…Galectin-3 is a β-galactoside binding lectin secreted by macrophages and its elevated levels can predict the progression from pAF to peAF (Wang Q et al, 2021). Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), a chemokine-like inflammatory cytokine, was also highly expressed in patients with AF, and AF progression corresponds to augmented MIF concentrations (Wan and Li, 2018). Additionally, as compared to the individuals without AF, atrial neutrophil extracellular traps and elevated serum myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were frequent in patients with AF, which suggested infiltration and activation of neutrophils (Rudolph et al, 2010;Holzwirth et al, 2020).…”
